As we move further into the 21st century, technology is constantly evolving and changing. This is especially true in the world of web design.
In order to stay ahead of the curve, it’s important to understand what trends and technologies are on the horizon.
20 years from now, it’s very likely that we’ll look back on today’s web design trends and be appalled–just like we are now looking at the clunky fonts and overly-animated designs from the early 2000s.
So what can we expect for the future of web design? Like any other trend, this is very hard to predict due to several factors:
Overuse of certain designs
Change isn’t always welcome, but when it comes to design, it’s often greeted with open arms.
People get tired of seeing the same things over and over again. Like anything else in this world, style comes in phases and can often become outdated once it’s overused.
Not to mention, new styles can emerge just because a popular brand used it.
Over time, small factors and minor differences like these can add up to create a major influence on the future of web design.
Changing consumer preferences
Humans are a very indecisive species, and we’re always changing our color and design preferences.
In 2021, web users preferred minimalist styles and muted colors, and it’s very likely that these preferences will stick around for at least a little while longer. As designers, it’s important to keep up with our consumers’ changing preferences in order to meet their desires.
Big world events
The past two years have been nothing short of a tumultuous, life-altering roller coaster. Big world events like COVID-19 and social justice have impacted every aspect of our lives–including web design.
For example, thanks to the pandemic, we’ve seen a major increase in the importance of mobile optimization and ecommerce. And with social media being a powerful tool for spreading awareness and rallying support, we can expect to see more creative uses of multimedia in web design moving forward.
Emergence of new technology
Back in the early 2000s, most people would’ve never guessed that the web would be primarily accessed by mobile phones one day.
These days, our main priority as web designers is to create flexible, responsive designs. In the future, we will likely be forced to rethink these principles once again as new technology is created.
Who’s to say what devices will enable us to browse the web in the future? With new technology constantly emerging and gaining internet access (e.g., AR, VR, and AI), it can be hard to keep up.
