No one knows for sure when COVID-19 will let up, but one thing is for certain: the way businesses interact with their customers will be forever changed as a result of it. If you haven't adopted a social media marketing strategy for COVID-19, now is the time to do so. 

With the economy in shambles and people afraid to leave their homes, attracting customers at this time can seem like a nearly impossible feat. Social media is one of the best ways to circumvent these obstacles. Here are five tips to increase your online audience and draw in consumers. 

1. Heavily market your reopening

Chances are that you’re in the process of reopening and are struggling to draw in enough revenue. In order to keep your business at the forefront of consumers’ minds as they begin to re-enter public spaces, it’s important to post consistently on social media.

Regardless of your industry, you need to be on social media–especially at a time like this when social media is integral to making sure people see that you’re open for business. Given that most consumers are still spending the majority of their free time at home on their phones, the best way to reach them is through digital media like Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or TikTok.

Create posts about the products and services that you’re offering in-store for consumers who are already out and about, as well as your online goods and services for those who still rely on them. Continue to let your audience know all of the steps you’re taking to keep your employees and customers safe, updating them every step of the way so they know what to expect.

2. Go live for your social media marketing during COVID-19

With COVID-19 cases spiking again in the U.S., consumers are placing heavy value on facilities that care about their safety. This can include anything from employees wearing masks, daily sanitizing, social distancing policies, and special shopping hours for the elderly. 

It’s one thing to create posts about what you’re doing to keep shoppers and employees safe, but it’s another to physically show this to your audience. Going live on Instagram or Facebook is a great way to prove to your audience that what you’re saying is true. This can be very encouraging to viewers, building brand loyalty and helping you stay at the tops of their minds. 

3. Offer a deal

Keep in mind that your customers are still adjusting to their new normal, and many may still be without jobs. Consider offering specials on social media for customers who visit your location in person. For example, post a coupon on your Facebook story that your followers can screenshot and redeem when they visit your store or offer 15% off to the first 30 people to visit you after reopening. 

4. Make sure your Google listing is up-to-date

Your Google listing is the first point of contact for many of your consumers. This is what shows up either at the top of search results or on the right side when someone googles your business name, products, or services (see example to the right).

If you’ve already reopened your business, you will need to update your hours online to reflect these changes. Check your Google, Bing, and Yelp listings, as well as your social media profiles and website for consistency. 

If any of your service offerings have changed or you’ve implemented new restrictions as a result of this pandemic, update your platforms to reflect these changes as well. If these changes are temporary, you can post them using Google My Business posts. These posts are only up for a few weeks at a time and are perfect for promoting temporary deals or changes. 

Consider pinning these updates to the top of your social media profiles to make it easier for your followers to find this information.

5. Change up your content

Your current social media goal should be to increase engagement. Getting your audience involved with your posts will help them feel like they’re a part of something in these dark times and increase the likelihood that they’ll shop with you. 

For example, consider creating a post that asks your customers to leave comments with any suggestions that they have on how to make your facility safer. Social media contests and informational videos are also a fun way to increase engagement and attract new customers.
